Start checking fields for stalk integrity

An agronomist says farmers will need to prioritize fields at harvest.

DEKALB brand manager Jamie Horton says the early presence of tar spot likely means growers will need to keep an eye on stalk integrity. “It really varies,” she says.  “When did that disease come in?  How aggressive was it?  And what did fungicide applications look like?”

She tells Brownfield now is the time to be scouting fields.   “Certainly, as Mother Nature allows us to get in and get that crop out and harvested,” she says.  “That’s the best thing we can do.”

As for crop size?  Horton says, “Everything that I’ve heard, on a local level back home, and as I’ve talked to growers, it’s above average when it comes to yields.”
