State ag directors take trade message to Kenya

The director of agriculture in Illinois says Africa holds tremendous trade potential for U.S. goods.

Jerry Costello tells Brownfield he and several other state directors of agriculture recently saw this firsthand in Kenya.

“According to what happens with biotech in Kenya, there’s probably the opportunity for maybe about half a million tons of grain to be exported from the United States into Kenya,” he says.

He says the livestock industry could also benefit.

“There’s a huge opportunity for us to export beef genetics to Kenya as well.”  He says, “I think we were able to identify a number of areas from a trade mission standpoint to where the United States can export to Kenya.”

The USDA has identified Africa as an emerging market and Costello says these trips help develop relationships.

Ag directors from Kansas, Wyoming, Tennessee, Texas, and South Carolina also attended the trip.
