State-inspected meat and poultry bill reintroduced in U.S. Senate
Legislation to help expand access to meat and poultry products has been reintroduced in the U.S. Senate.
Iowa Republican Chuck Grassley tells Brownfield the New Markets for State-Inspected Meat and Poultry Act would allow products inspected by state inspection programs to be sold across state lines.
“The in-state consumption of that meat, which was required under state law, wasn’t a big enough marketplace for them. But they couldn’t sell across state lines without certain federally approved inspections of the state inspection.”
He says currently meat and poultry products inspected by state programs are limited to markets within the state despite meeting federal inspection standards.
Additional cosponsors include South Dakota Senator John Thune and Minnesota Senator Tina Smith.
