State legislators gather during the Rural Caucus at the Indiana State Fair

An Indiana state senator says the Rural Caucus, held during the state fair, serves as an opportunity to meet to discuss key issues affecting rural communities.

Brian Buchanan (R, IN) says industry leaders give updates on the status of agriculture across the state.

“We heard from the department of ag and Don Lamb talking about land use and the report of how much land we’ve lost in Indiana over the last several years,” he says. “That’s always a discussion.”

He tells Brownfield property taxes remain a big issue for the state.

“We’ve had some tremendous spikes in property tax bills, which was caused by the tremendous inflation,” he says. “There’s a lot of ideas to provide some relief for Indiana property taxpayers.”

Other topics discussed during the 2024 Rural Caucus were water rights, energy sustainability, and ag policy.
