Staying ahead of the weeds
An extension agronomist says weed control is critical during the early parts of the growing season.
Meaghan Anderson is with Iowa State University and says, “Corn especially does not handle competition from weeds well. We could see some pretty substantial weed loss if we let them get away from us. I’ve been kind of happy to hear from some farmers that have said they couldn’t plant a field yet because it hasn’t been sprayed.”
She tells Brownfield waterhemp is one of the most challenging weeds to manage. “Basically from east to west and north to south across the state.”
Anderson says other weed species have been prevalent on no-till acres. “Marestail has been the frontrunner but I’ve seen more henbit in recent years.”
She says weed pressure can cause significant yield loss.
