Still a “wild west” for climate smart opportunities
A farm specialist with Missouri Soybean says farmers and ranchers are still learning to navigate opportunities from the Climate-Smart Commodities grants that were announced in 2022.
“It’s, right now, still the wild west”
Clayton Light, Director of Conservation Agriculture and Farm Operations, says there’s a lot of information being shared about climate-smart programs.
“There are really good opportunities, and we just want to make sure farmers know how to navigate those.”
He tells Brownfield farmers are likely hearing from a lot of different entities promoting these practices.
“There’s going to be companies, there’s organizations knocking on the door asking them (farmers) can you put cover crops on your field? Can you do these practices for me and maybe we buy the grain, or we do this, or we claim that is an offset on our company’s organization.”
Light says 30 projects have a footprint in Missouri.
