Still no H5N1 in Wisconsin’s dairy cattle

Wisconsin’s dairy herds remain free of the H5N1 avian influenza virus.

The state has required influenza A testing prior to the movement of lactating dairy cattle to fairs or exhibitions since June 19th.  State Ag Secretary Randy Romanski says so far, Wisconsin has no affected herds. “There continue to be tests done in Wisconsin, and all tests thus far done in Wisconsin for H5N1 in dairy cattle have been negative.”

Romanski says the agency remains actively engaged with producers to promote biosecurity efforts to help prevent the spread of H5N1.  “Our responsibility as an agency is to continue to do outreach. Our Division of Animal Health is doing a stellar job with that.”

Romanski gave his update on the virus to the Wisconsin Ag Education and Workforce Development Council Monday.

So far, the H5N1 avian influenza virus has infected dairy herds in fourteen states.  California is the latest state affected.  Colorado has the most affected herds with 64.  Iowa and Michigan round out the top three with 30 and 29 herds, respectively.
