Storm winds drive barn boards into home on southwest Iowa farm

A southwest Iowa farmer says destructive winds and hail hit his farm on Thursday morning.

John Hanson farms 700 acres about seven miles south of Stanton near Bethesda…

“The winds that came through at Essex were reported at 90 miles per hour,” he said. “We were also in that band I think, mostly straight-line. A little bit of hail here at our house.”

He tells Brownfield the winds sent boards from his barn through the walls of his house.

“That side of the barn is probably 100 yards from the house,” Hanson said. “We had a 1×6 that was 6-foot into the house. We had a 2×4 that was 8-inches into the wall. And then there’s nails from the barn that looked like you shot them into the wall.”

Hanson says some of his crops were damaged.

“There’s some green snap,” he said, “and some corn that’s laid over that will more than likely stand back up. You see some leaf tearing from the hail that we had. As you go farther south, baseball size hail as you get down towards Highway 2.”

He says neighbors came by to help with cleanup, and the property was back in shape by Thursday afternoon.
