A crop insurance expert says growers can head into the 2026 season with increased confidence in federal coverage.

Tom Zacharias is the president of National Crop Insurance Services and says, “They should have plenty of coverage options out there. It should much more affordable than in the past.”

He tells Brownfield the One Big Beautiful Bill, signed by President Trump in 2025, strengthened coverage. He says he doesn’t expect crop insurance to be a focal point of a new five-year farm bill.

“For crop insurance, this crossed a lot of t’s and dotted a lot of I’s. Is there more work to do with specialty crops, etc.? You know, there’s areas where the program can be further enhanced.”

Zacharias says young farmers and ranchers also received an expansion of premium support.
