Strong appetite for U.S. cheese lifts exports

The U.S. Dairy Export Council says modest improvements in dairy shipments during August helped push volumes ahead of last year.

Total U.S. dairy export volumes were up 1.7 percent from last August and values were up 10 percent to $708 million, the biggest jump of the year.

Shipments of cheese were up 15 percent year over year. Low protein exports were up five percent while nonfat dry milk/skim milk powder exports were down one percent. Exports of “other cheeses” like gouda experienced a major bump during the month, up 31 percent from last August.

Cheese exports to the Middle East and North Africa were up 136 percent for the month. Demand was also strong in Mexico, the Philippines, South America, and Central America/Caribbean
