Strong U.S. and Canada relationship is essential for agriculture

The Canadian Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food says fair trade between the U.S. and Canada remains a top priority. 

Lawrence MacAulay says any disruption in trade, including tariffs, would be devastating to the ag sector.

“Farm families, food processors, and consumers across the United States can count on Canada,” he says. “We have a one of the kind trading relationship between our countries and a long history of supporting each other.”

During the 2025 National Association of State Departments of Agriculture Winter Meeting, he said the U.S. and Canada relationship is essential to maintaining North American agriculture.

“We do our part to help feed Americans, and we know that you folks are vital to providing the U.S. and Canada with products that we so vitally need,” he says. “It’s a vital partnership for farmers, businesses and our food security here in North America and around the world.”

MacAulay says he’s looking forward to working with Ag Secretary Brooke Rollins on the 2026 review of the USMCA.

On Monday, President Trump announced his plans to proceed with tariffs on Canada and Mexico that are set to begin on March 4th.
