Strong winds lead to dusty fields in northwest Iowa

A northwest Iowa farmer says high temperatures and strong winds led to some challenging conditions Friday.
Kelly Nieuwenhuis tells Brownfield, “I’m glad we do very minimal tillage. We do a one-pass vertical tillage on our bean stubble and we don’t have dirt flying today, but fall tillage on bean stubble fields the dust is flying today. I’m just glad our dirt is staying put.”
He says rain has been minimal this spring. “The no-till beans sure could use a rain. They are struggling to get through. The 90-degree temps turned that ground like a rock. It got hard and so we need some rain to soften that topsoil up.”
But Nieuwenhuis says his corn looks better than expected. “Emergence is probably about as good as it’s ever been. We started planting April 15th and finished corn planting May 1st. The stand is about perfect.”
Nieuwenhuis raises soybeans and corn in O’Brien County.
