Study: Iowa pig farmers contribute $15.4B to state’s economy
A new study from the Iowa Pork Producers Association reveals pig farmers are a vital component of the state’s economy.
IPPA President Matt Gent tells Brownfield the pork industry contributed $15.4 billion in value added to Iowa’s economy in 2024. “Iowa produces 33%, so right at one-third, of all the pigs raised in the U.S. The biggest impact that pork brings to the state is 120,000 statewide jobs.”
He says he expects an even larger contribution in 2025. “If you ask most producers, 2024 was not the best year for the hog market. Most years would be much higher than that. The pork industry brings a lot to this state – almost $8 billion in household income and $40.5 billion in total sales.”
Gent says pig farms with 2,000-to-5,000 head remain the most common in the state, comprising 31% of all pig farms in Iowa.
