Subsoil moisture outlook for 2025

The state climatologist for Iowa says he’s keeping a close eye on subsoil moisture profiles across the region.
Justin Glisan with the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship says it’s an important factor for the 2025 growing season. “Where we are in terms of soil moisture, stream flows, and precipitation deficits, we are much better than we were last year at this time.”
He tells Brownfield more improvement could be possible this winter. “If we can bank any soil moisture before the profile freezes up, especially with these colder temperatures we’re seeing, anything is good for the next growing season.”
Glisan says a large winter snowpack would also be beneficial. “Get more infiltration in the soil profiles with that melting snow. That’s what we would be looking for.”
He says the wetter than expected spring in 2024 helped put growers in a better position compared to the previous three drought-impacted years.
