Summer heat headed to the Midwest

A National Weather Service meteorologist says the first blast of summer heat is headed to the Midwest.

Ed Shimon tells Brownfield temperatures are expected to begin climbing later this week.

“From the Great Lakes all the way down to Kansas. So, it’s a big swath, Ohio River Valley, Mid-Mississippi River valley. You know, even into the central Plains and Texas.”  He says, “So basically the eastern, you know, well, all east of the Rockies is all above normal.”

He says farmers should take precautions.

“Because when you just walk into that the first few days, your body over sweats and you lose a lot more moisture.”  He says, “Drink more than you think you need.  Make sure you have a way to get into the air conditioning and wear light colored clothing and just recognize when you’re overstressed.”

Shimon says outlooks for the rest of June show the heat sticking around accompanied with a return of above normal precipitation.
