Some surprising yields in SW Indiana
Almost any yield would have been better than what some farmers experienced last year. That’s the case for Randy Kron who farms in southwest Indiana. He says while he knew yields would be better – he was still in for a surprise. “Typical dirt, what I call Number 1 dirt, that typically yields well year in and year out is doing well,” he says. “It’s probably close to average. But we’ve had some of our sandier ground yield well over 200 bushel corn, which is not typical for non-irrigated sand.”
Kron tells Brownfield they haven’t started on beans yet. “I actually checked some of our beans this morning,” he says. “I’m thinking mid-next week we’ll be able to cut some beans and I see several fields like that. So really, in this area, you’d have to hunt to find a bean field cut.”
Earlier this week – USDA reported 6% of the corn and 4% of soybeans harvested in Indiana.
