Sustainability in the soy industry
The new treasurer of the United Soybean Board says he continues to focus on sustainable ag practices on his operation.
Matt Gast is a first-generation farmer from Valley City, North Dakota where he grows soybeans and corn. “When it comes to planting or fertilizer, we want to maximize the technology out there. Variable rating, the soil sampling, and only putting on the fertilizer that we need and not just putting on the same rate across the field, especially in tougher agriculture times.”
He tells Brownfield sustainability was discussion point during USB’s recent December board meeting. “We hear that quite a bit. I think it’s important to a lot of people and it’s becoming a more prevalent phrase throughout the ag world. We’ve got to stay ahead of things and continue to move forward on that front.”
Gast says some producers are prioritizing saving as much money as they can per acre amid tough economic conditions.
