Tariffs could boost organic grain markets
The senior merchandiser at Illinois-based Clarkson Grain says proposed import tariffs on countries like Canada could boost organic grain prices for U.S. farmers.
Kelsey Graber tells Brownfield, “The organic space imports a lot of organic grains.” She says, “There’s a lot of concerns around the integrity of the organic grains coming in from other countries. So, you know if there are import tariffs, it could actually help the organic space if we’re limiting the amount of grain that’s coming in from the outside.”
She says organic farmers could use the boost.
“We’re at historic low levels on organic corn and soybeans.” She says, “I think if you break much lower, you will lose a lot of that profitability of what you get to be in the organic space.”
Graber says demand for organic food-grade grains continues to grow, and she’s optimistic about the market outlook for 2025.
