Tax wins included in the OBBBA could benefit farmer-owned businesses

The president and CEO of the National Council of Farmer Cooperatives says tax provisions included in recently passed One Big Beautiful Bill Act could benefit farmer-owned businesses. 

Duane Simpson says Section 199A allows NCFC member cooperatives to compete with larger ag corporations.

“Just within our membership, it’s about $2 billion worth of taxes that were going to be raised starting in 2026,” he says. “That now gets to stay out in rural America and most of that gets passed onto the farmer.”

He tells Brownfield the bill also helps farmers in future proofing their operations.

“The estate tax,” he says. “They increased the state and local tax exemption. A lot of really good tax legislation.”

Simpson says the organization remains focused on other pieces of legislation not included in the reconciliation package that will impact the future of U.S. agriculture.
