Technology drives new era of efficiency for pork producers

Technology is helping shape modern pork production.

Iowa State University Animal Science Department chair Jason Ross says the pork industry is leaning into innovation.

“Those can really help a producer or farmer drill into specific things (like) how do I manage my business differently? How do I manage technology in the barns, whether it’s bin sensors or artificial intelligence?”

Speaking to Brownfield Thursday during Iowa Swine Day in Ames, he said technology is evolving at a rapid pace.

“What I see people looking at is how to connect their farms through technology, to be able to do remote sensing. Whether that’s measuring air flow through the farm, or measuring the amount of feed in a bin. Or using camera sensor technologies to be able to look into the farm at any point.”

Ross says pork producers are learning how to process that information to make management decisions.
