Tensions high with late harvest
A field crops educator is reminding farmers to use weather breaks to reduce stress during harvest.
Monica Jean with Michigan State University Extension says she’s concerned about how rain delays are impacting farmers.
“It’s a huge crunch time,” she shares. “We’re getting late and the weather is not quite cooperating. Remember to breathe, maybe go do something fun instead with your family if you can’t do anything else. And just try to find the positive—it can be really hard.”
She says MSU has a telehealth program to help those who need support.
“We have professionals that work with farmers on farm stress, so if you’re having a hard time dealing with it on your own, just know you’re not alone,” she says. “A lot of people are stressed out right now.”
The latest crop report says Michigan crop harvests are running behind the five-year average, but only slightly. Corn is only one percent from average while soybeans are behind by eight percent.
