The challenges of a budget year in the General Assembly
District 16 State Representative Kendell Culp says 2025 is a budget year and Indiana agriculture will have to compete for limited resources and funding.
He tells Brownfield, “Coming from local government myself, with my background as a county commissioner in Jasper County, I think it’s important to realize that you have to have adequate funding for those services that the residents and citizens of Indiana need and deserve. We’ve got to balance that out.”
During the 2025 Indiana Farm Bureau Legislative Forum, Culp said water and taxes are a primary concern, but other legislation may take center stage.
“There will be legislation from a tax incentive standpoint to encourage erection of grain handling, facilities, drying, storage facilities both on the farm level and from a commercial standpoint,” he says. “We need to make sure farmers have the tools and the equipment that they need to continue to produce food.”
Culp says it’s important for farmers to contact their local representatives to voice their concerns.
“A lot of the times the legislation that I introduce comes directly from a constituent and the needs of the constituency,” he says. “This is how you help Indiana grow, that’s how you help your constituents be successful.”
The 2025 Indiana legislative session continues throughout the month of April.
