The cull cattle market is providing producers with opportunities
The market news manager for the Missouri Department of Agriculture says the current strength in the cull cow market provides opportunities for producers.
Tony Hancock says, “You got some of those cows that you’ve kept around. The value of those is incredible. Yes, you’re going to pay a fair amount for some replacement younger heifers, but when you can sell these cull cows for easily two grand. Plus, that gives you a lot of opportunity to invest in some younger genetics.”
He says prices continue to move higher, largely because supplies aren’t large enough to meet demand.
“A decent cull cow with a little bit of fat cover on her, you know, that could be broken down into a few cuts, they’ll bring you up, you know, one fifty-five or so,” he says. “If they’re really heavy muscle could get up into the one eighties on some high dressing cows.”
Hancock says there’s also been strength in the lean cow and bull market.
