The fight for permanent year-round E15 sales continues

Biofuel supporters are still pursuing a long-term fix for year-round E15 sales.

The U.S. EPA issued an emergency waiver last month allowing sales of the fuel during the 2024 summer driving season, but U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa says stop gap authorizations need to end.

He tells Brownfield his Consumer and Fuel Retailer Choice Act would permanently grant year-round sales of ethanol blends higher than 10%. “There may be other bills to do the same thing,” Grassley said. “But I’m just talking about the one I know about, and I think they all work in the same direction.”

Republican Deb Fischer of Nebraska and Democrat Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota are co-authors of the legislation.

Geoff Cooper, president and CEO of the Renewable Fuels Association, says summertime barriers are outdated. “We can’t continue to operate in this uncertain environment and with these ad hoc, last-minute solutions,” Cooper said. “We need a permanent resolution to this problem.”

Cooper says RFA is supporting the Grassley bill and believes it can get bipartisan support in Congress.
