The first half of Indiana’s legislative session is complete
The director of public policy for Indiana Farm Bureau says property taxes have dominated the first half of the Indiana legislative session.
Andy Tauer says finding a solution is a priority for the organization and its members.
“Senate Bill One is the large property tax bill that started out in the Senate and has now moved over to the House,” he says. “There has been some some movement there with some changes, but they’re not quite what we’d like to see at this point. We’ll continue to work with the House members on this.”
He tells Brownfield finding a formula is crucial as property taxes have gone up and net farm income has decreased.
“We started out with a 17% increase, then we were followed by a 26.4% increase,” he says. “As tax bills get dropped in the mailbox here for 2025, we’re looking at about another 20% increase. We’re really trying to get that leveled out and see if we can modernize that formula.”
Senate Bill 28, which addresses statewide water protections, has advanced out of the Senate and is now in the House.
The second half of the state’s legislative session picks back up on March 3rd.
