The importance of carcass management planning
The communications director for the Ohio Pork Council says carcass management is a critical component to foreign animal disease preparedness.
Mike King says composting is key in developing an effective plan.
“To do that successfully, you need a great carbon source, because that’s really what helps breakdown the carcass and provide that heat and energy that’s necessary,” he says.
He tells Brownfield that the recent cases of foreign animal diseases should have producers evaluating current biosecurity measures.
“Obviously, we’ve all seen the unfortunate things with avian influenza,” he says. “Currently, Germany has foot and mouth disease. These are all things that we need to be prepared for and unfortunately that is probably going to mean depopulation and disposal.”
King says composting is often overlooked, but having a plan in place can be crucial if depopulation of a herd is necessary.
