The key to greater yield potential
A soybean agronomy lead with BASF says it starts with the seed.
“At BASF, we’re focused on making sure growers have the genetics they need for a successful crop,” says Marc Hoobler. “And once that crop is planted, the environment is the biggest yield-limiting factor, which goes beyond weather to the field level.”
He says understanding how soybeans build yield in different soil types and different parts of the country make a difference and then, applying different management practices.
“We focus a lot on plant populations, but after variety selection, the planting date is the single most important factor a grower can do and manage for higher yields.”
Hoobler says growers should plant soybeans before corn.
“It’s a slow process, but we’re starting to see that more widespread and we’re learning a lot about potential.”
Hoobler joined Ryan Meyers and Nick Fassler for a panel discussion on yield during the Farm Progress Show in Decatur, Illinois. Hear the panel.
