The Mississippi River is open for business early

Grain and fertilizer can once again move on the upper Mississippi River.

The Army Corps of Engineers reports the first tow of barges arrived in St. Paul, Minnesota Monday.  The Motor Vessel Crockett was first through the locks at Hastings, Minnesota and was immediately followed by four more tows.

Normally, ice in Lake Pepin, near Red Wing, Minnesota, and Nelson, Wisconsin, prevents tows from heading upstream this early.
