Thinking about weed control in 2025
A technical development rep with Bayer says it’s not too early for farmers think about weed control in 2025.
Southern Illinois based Randy McElroy says weed control starts before the seed is planted.
“The idea of starting clean is I don’t have green vegetative tissue out there when I plant, whether I accomplished that to tillage or I accomplish that with a herbicide that removes that green tissue,” he says.
He tells Brownfield a three pass program is the most effective.
“I’m planting my beans the 1st of May, I’m back spraying that field again and by spraying clean I mean there’s not emerged weeds out there and I’m not relying upon post emergence weed control,” he says.
McElroy says in order to develop a successful weed management strategy, farmers should consistently scout fields and take notes at harvest.
