Third case of HPAI reported in Jay County, Indiana in 2025

A third case of highly pathogenic avian influenza has been detected in a Jay County (east central), Indiana commercial turkey operation.

Denise Derrer Spears with Indiana’s Board of Animal Health says more than 18,000 birds will be depopulated.

“What’s really important in these situations is rapid response,” she says. “Getting a lot of people on the ground who can assist the producers. There’s a lot of testing that’s happening with farms in the control area. There’s a 10 kilometer circle around each of those sites where the virus has been identified.”

She tells Brownfield farmers need to evaluate their biosecurity plan.

“We need to make sure that traffic into and out of the area of the space where the birds are is minimal,” she says. “Make sure that the shoes that are being worn, the clothing worn in there is not worn to other farms or out in the public.”

Avian influenza does not present a food safety risk.

BOAH also reminds dairy producers to be vigilant in their surveillance. According to rules established by the USDA, lactating dairy cattle must have a negative test before interstate movement.  The department has also expanded surveillance through testing milk at the farm or processor level to establish the health status of herds, as well as states.
