Threat of early frost looms large
The threat of an early frost looms large as corn and soybeans try to catch up from delayed planting.
AccuWeather ag meteorologist Dale Mohler says a hard freeze in mid to late September, or even in the first week of October, would be devastating.
“An early frost this year would do a lot more damage than most years because of the late maturation of the crop.”
He tells Brownfield there’s a slightly heightened risk of a killing freeze striking a week or so earlier than normal.
“And if that’s the case, that’s going to be a bit of a problem.”
Mohler says the summer location of the jet stream and where it was the previous winter help predict the timing of the first frost. He’s also watching temperature patterns in the Pacific.
