Tighter milk supplies raise concerns for future dairy production

A dairy market analyst says tighter milk supplies could have an impact on the industry’s ability to produce dairy products moving forward.

Sarah Jungman with AgMarket.net says the summer heat is making it more difficult to maintain production levels.

“When the weather starts to heat up, and cow comfort makes it difficult for these cows to maintain some of the high levels of production that they’ve been producing,” she says. “It’s just made milk a little bit less available.”

She tells Brownfield an uptick in consumer demand for ice cream is also increasing dairy output.

“The production lines really ramped up production because of that bigger demand,” she says. “Higher heat means more ice cream sold. It happens this time of year every year.” 

Jungman says prolonged warmer weather could further reduce milk availability and have a larger impact on the market.
