Time for post-harvest burndown plans
A technical services representative with BASF says farmers that dealt with winter annual weed challenges this spring should consider a burndown this fall.
Mike Probst, who covers the southern half of Illinois, tells Brownfield…
“The folks that used a fall burned down last year, boy, you could really tell the difference.” He says, “Those fields just stayed cleaner, longer. They weren’t grown up. They just had a heck of a lot easier time cleaning up anything that had come through.”
He says timing of the application is key to its effectiveness.
“The one thing I worry about going out too early is that maybe you actually don’t get some of those winter annuals or you get ahead of them a little bit.” He says, “I don’t think anybody needs to be in a hurry. Maybe more kind of in that October time frame when some of those winter annuals actually get a chance to emerge.”
Probst says farmers should also apply a residual herbicide with the burndown application for longer weed control.
