Time to prioritize corn planting

An agronomist says farmers who still have both corn and soybeans to plant should prioritize corn.

Ryan Gentle, Illinois agronomy manager at Wyffels Hybrids, tells Brownfield…

“Very important to get the corn put in the ground.”  He says, “You kind of already passed that early planting benefit with the soybeans and the big thing with beans is you don’t lose yield near as fast as you do with corn once you’re in the Memorial Day – June 1st time frame.”

Western Illinois farmer and Illinois Soybean Association board member, Brady Holst agrees.

“If it’s May, I’d would go ahead and make sure we’re working on corn to get that all done, because the corn yield starts dropping off pretty quickly.”  He says, “We usually go back and, you know, make sure the corn is done first.”

Both say planting into proper soil conditions remains a priority.
