Timing weed control with the weather

An agronomy expert from South Dakota says farmers should prioritize weed control.

Darren Hefty, co-host of Ag PhD Radio, says it’s important to get in front of problematic weeds.

“Most of the guys are putting on preemergence herbicides,” he said. “That’s for a couple reasons. One, we generally see more yield. Two, if we can control them early, it makes it so much easier to come back in later on and clean things up.”

But he tells Brownfield the weather hasn’t cooperated for some farmers across the country.

“The preemergence herbicides with the little bit of rain we’ve got should be working really good, but I know there are some areas of the country where we’ve talked to guys that it’s just never stopped raining there. They haven’t been able to get out. I can imagine they will have quite a mess to clean up at some point.”

Hefty says yields can be impacted if growers led weeds take over their fields.

He spoke to Brownfield in a recent video interview, which can be viewed below.
