‘Toughest year’ for Ohio farmer

Central Ohio farmer Bret Davis says this is the toughest year he’s had in his 40-plus years of farming.

“This is the first year I’ve never got all my crops planted—and what I did was planted a month-and-a-half behind,” Davis says. “We’ve got corn that’s still knee-high. The very first corn is close to being ready to tassel. But, boy, things look rough.”

Davis, who farms near Delaware, Ohio, says they had to take prevent plant on 140 acres of corn.

“That’s about ten percent, that we left lay idle, that we’re going to have to deal with this summer, getting it fit and getting cover crops planted on it—and waiting for next year. That’s what everybody says around here: ‘Let’s get this year over and let’s look at 2020′.”

Davis says his soybeans don’t look too bad but are way behind in their development.
