Trade officials look to update USMCA ahead of July review
The U.S. Trade Representative says the upcoming review of the U.S. – Mexico- Canada Agreement is an opportunity to strengthen trilateral trade.
“Things need to be changed,” he says.
Ambassador Jamieson Greer says the administration is concerned about a lack of enforcement.
“We want to resolve as much as we can,” he says. “We’ve worked closely with the Mexicans over the past year. They’ve resolved a lot of issues. We have some issues with the Canadians that haven’t been resolved yet.”
He says the U.S. is currently looking to develop a protocol with each country to help address non-tariff trade barriers.
“Our import export profile is different with each country,” he says. “The labor situation in each country is different. The reasons why we have deficits with these countries are different. It necessitates two separate protocols that we can layer over the low hanging pillars of USMCA.”
A joint review of the USMCA will begin on July 1st.
Greer made his comments during a recent Hudson Fireside Chat.
