Trade requires more than a handshake
The president of the National Farmers Union says it’s been encouraging to see the Trump administration pause the on-again, off-again tariffs to work on trade deals.
But Rob Larew says U.S. agriculture needs more than a handshake.
“We’re going to need to see very concrete actions taken on the part of China, who has a long history of not fulfilling its promises on trade.”
The U.S. and China currently have a trade truce in place through August.
In less than 90 days, the U.S. has secured one agreement with the United Kingdom. Larew says the framework with the UK is positive.
“It’s an approach that helps markets and farmers be more optimistic about where this might head.”
The administration is also considering trade deals with India and Japan with less than two weeks until President Trump’s 90-day tariff pause is expected to end.
