Transitioning to organic livestock production
Purdue University hasdeveloped a web site to help producer’s interested, transition from conventional to organic livestock production.
“Producers will learn what feeds are allowed, what kind of housing is necessary, even things like how the meat must be processed to become certifiedorganic,” said Paul Ebner, Purdue University animal sciences specialist and web site coordinator.
In addition to organic, Ebner says there is also information about the new USDA grass-fed beef program.
“So similar to the organic label, now we have a USDA grass-fed label where producers can become certified by a third party as to the process they are using to produce the beef,” Ebner said.
The Organic and Alternative Livestock ProductionSystems web site offers fact sheets, Extension publications, PowerPoint presentations and videos at the site’s YouTube channel PurdueOrganic.
