An ag transportation expert says maintaining a reliable and efficient supply chain is critical as pressures mount across agriculture.

“There’s a lot of stress among farmers,” said Mike Steenhoek with the Soy Transportation Coalition.

Steenhoek says transportation costs have a direct impact a farm’s financial performance.

“If you have a costly, cumbersome, inefficient and unreliable transportation system then farmers won’t be profitable.”

He tells Brownfield he’s urging federal officials to prioritize lowering costs within the ag transportation system.

“Farmers grow a crop and then you’ve got demand for that crop. That could be domestic demand or international demand, but what connects the two is transportation.”

Steenhoek says when supply chains are disrupted, freight still moves but it costs more, so consumers and farmers pay the price.

He spoke to Brownfield at the Iowa Soybean Association’s Farm Forward Conference on Wednesday:
