Trump 2.0 comes with some uncertainty, and expected ups and downs
An ag policy expert says he expects a lot of uncertainty as President-elect Trump prepares for his second term.
Jim Wiesemeyer says there are some concerns for agriculture in his second term, but there are some opportunities. “One is deregulation,” he says. “One of his signature issues during his first administration was deregulation. For every new regulation, he had to have 4 go away. Now, I think they’re going to double that.”
But, he tells Brownfield what the President-elect does with Sustainable Aviation Fuel remains to be seen. “But farm-state lawmakers, both Democrats and Republicans, are in favor of that,” he says. “I think they will be the deciding element on that.”
And then there’s the incoming administration’s trade policy. “Tariffs, which he calls the best word in the English Dictionary,” he says. “He’s using it as leverage and coercion, if you will, in some cases. He’s received some initial positive reactions.”
Wiesemeyer says Trump learned a lot during his first term, and with some of his announced cabinet picks, he’s expected to hit the ground running in January.
Brownfield interviewed Wiesemeyer during Missouri Farm Bureau’s annual meeting.
