Trump eyes February 1st to impose tariffs on Canada and Mexico

President Trump plans to impose tariffs on Canada and Mexico by the beginning of next month.

Speaking to reporters Monday, Trump said he expects to issue 25 percent tariffs on imports from both countries starting February 1st.

U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley tells Brownfield he believes in fair trade and supports the U.S. Mexico Canada Agreement.

“On the other hand, I think Trump has a new approach to tariffs. To put them on, bring people to the table, get (more) free trade. I don’t know that it’s going to work, but I’m not going to badmouth Trump in the meantime.”

The Iowa Republican is doubtful efforts in Congress to restrict the President’s authority to impose tariffs will be successful, citing a failed attempt when he was chair of the Senate Finance Committee.

“I wanted to accomplish two things, I thought there was abuse of the installation of tariffs. And then I wanted to recapture some of the legislative power to govern interstate and foreign commerce.”

Grassley says he was not successful then and is pessimistic any attempt will be this time.
