Two Wisconsin farmers look at early soybean planting

Two Wisconsin farmers are taking different approaches to the start of the planting season.

South-central farmer Doug Rebout of Janesville says some research has shown the benefits of planting soybeans early. “We put in 35 acres and then parked the planter after that, but we just wanted to do a little experiment. We just wanted to see putting beans in in March, just how they would come up.”

Juneau area farmer Ryan Nell says he plants soybeans as early as possible, but the weather is an issue. “From a beans standpoint, once it reaches April, I’m kind of ‘game on’ where now, it’s, you know, I’ll run two machines if we get that chance to do it. They’re showing quite a bit of rain, so that’s looking more difficult, I would say.”

Nell says everything is ready to roll when the weather is right.

Rebout has been strip tilling so he can start planting corn around April 18th.
