U.S. and India make headway on trade issues

The U.S. Trade Representative and her counterpart from India identified joint trade goals during meetings this week.  Katherine Tai says both sides recognized the importance of engaging in discussion on a full range of existing and emerging issues affecting their trade relationship.

During this week’s ministerial-level meetings, the U.S. and India made progress on a work plan to allow pomegranate exports from India to the U.S., and phytosanitary certification allowing U.S. alfalfa hay for animal feed into India.  U.S. leaders agreed to complete India’s request for table grapes access to the United States, and India agreed to finalize a mutually agreed upon export certificate to allow the importation of U.S. pork and pork products.  The two sides say there are tangible benefits for Indian and U.S. farmers and businesses by resolving market access issues.

The USTR office issued a statement saying the U.S. and India agreed that the Trade Policy Forum working groups on agriculture, non-agriculture goods, services, investment, and intellectual property should be re-activated to address issues on an ongoing basis.  They also agreed India and the United States could, together with like-minded partners, take a leading role in developing secure supply chains in critical sectors of trade and technology.

The U.S. and India have committed to more ministerial-level meetings in 2022.
