U.S. and Japan work through trade negotiations
President Trump says Japan doesn’t want American grown rice and he’s threatened higher tariffs as a result.
Arlan Suderman with Stone X Group says the message from President Trump is likely a point of leverage as trade negotiations continue.
“To try and maybe get them to give on other points.”
Suderman says the type of rice the Japanese consumer buys isn’t widely grown in the United States.
“It’s a very specific type of rice we only grow in a small area of California and we consume what’s produced there here in the United States.”
The U.S. and Japan have been working on a trade framework while tariffs are on pause through July 9.
