U.S. Congressman says land acquisition remains a challenge for young producers

A U.S. Congressman from Ohio says more needs to be done to help the next generation acquire farmland.
Greg Landsman says it’s becoming increasingly difficult for new, beginning, and young farmers to get started in the industry.
“If you’re not cash rich, you’re really struggling in this economy,” he says. “For farmers, prices fluctuate. It’s really hard to stay afloat. This is where the government has to step up and do everything in our power to protect family farmers.”
He tells Brownfield recently introduced legislation could help retiring farmers transition their land.
“It would require the Secretary of Agriculture to facilitate the transfer of land, businesses, and properties from farmer to farmer,” he says. “More and more of our farmers are being priced out of their land.”
The Rural Voices Conservation Coalition and the Ohio Ecological Food and Farm Association have endorsed the Family Farm Transition Act.
