U.S. dairy industry sees market potential in ongoing Canada trade dispute
A trade policy expert says the Trump administration’s latest use of tariffs is designed to bring Canada back to the negotiating table.
“By combining the tariffs with auto, it’s really gotten Canada’s attention in a way that hasn’t happened over the past year,” she says.
Becky Rasdall Vargas with the International Dairy Foods Association says President Trump’s 50 percent tariffs are set to take effect on August 19th and it could result in increased access for U.S. dairy farmers.
“These are commitments they agreed to in the USMCA and we would just like to see them live up to their commitments,” she says.
Rasdall says she’s optimistic the two governments will be able to finalize a deal that benefits both countries.
Canada is the second largest export market for U.S. agricultural goods.
