U.S. egg production higher in January

Egg production was up in January.

The USDA says 9.274 billion eggs were produced in January 2024, an increase of 2% from January 2023, with table and hatching eggs both above the previous year.

The number of egg laying hens on February 1st was slightly higher while the rate of lay per day was up 2%.

Egg type chicks hatched grew by 3%, with placements of pullets for future hatchery supply flocks climbing 5%, implying a bigger supply of eggs in the coming weeks.

Broiler type chicks hatched were modestly lower, while placements of pullets for future broiler hatchery supplies dropped 9%, meaning lower supplies of chicken for consumption later this year.

The USDA’s next set of annual poultry and egg production projections is out March 8th.
