U.S. export demand “phenomenal,” economist says

An ag economist says there continues to be a good flow of U.S. ag goods to global markets.

“The demand on the export side has been phenomenal,” said Jim McCormick with AgMarket.Net.

McCormick says several trading partners, specifically Mexico and Colombia, have been increasing their purchases of U.S. corn. “Corn sales are 30%-to-35% better than a year ago. The real question is, is this front-loaded demand or is this better demand than we thought?”

He tells Brownfield, “What I mean by that is President Trump has been talking about slapping tariffs on pretty much anyone and everyone. Did we see the importers of the world say, ‘Look, I’m going to try to get as much grain bought and shipped before the president gets inaugurated on January 20th.’ So, these sales could be front-loaded.”

McCormick says he’ll be keeping a close eye on President-elect Trump’s tariff threats to Mexico and if it has any impact on future sales.
