U.S. Meat Export Federation prioritizes demand growth

The president of the U.S. Meat Export Federation says growing demand for U.S. beef on the global market is a marathon. Dan Halstrom says the organization continues its work to build relationships with customers and grow the value of U.S. beef. 

He says the potential for growth is enormous. “Look at Southeast Asia, places like Indonesia, places like Africa,” he says.  “Where we only have hit the very tip of the iceberg.”

He tells Brownfield substantial demand growth doesn’t happen overnight. “What we’re doing, it’s blocking and tackling to increase demand bit by bit, region by region,” he says.  “With the hope that in the sum that that total value grows over time.”

Halstrom says higher prices could have been a severe headwind, but that’s not been the case. “The number one question that we’re getting from customers around the world is not so much why are price is so high,” he says.  “They understand why it’s high. Their first question is how soon will we see the herd rebuild?”
